Happy Father's Day

Father's Day is a special occasion to celebrate and honor the men who have shaped our lives and faith. Whether they are our biological fathers, adoptive fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, or spiritual fathers, they play an important role in our development and well-being. As someone who grew up without a father, I did not have a good start at fatherhood but I was blessed to be saved in a fellowship that taught me what a man of God and father is supposed to be.

"And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise" - Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (ESV).

This scripture emphasizes the responsibility of fathers to diligently teach God's commandments to their children. It highlights the importance of consistent and intentional instruction in the ways of God within the family unit. By prioritizing the spiritual upbringing of their children, fathers play a crucial role in passing on the faith from generation to generation.

"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." - Ephesians 6:4 (KJV)

This verse from the New Testament encourages fathers to raise their children in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord," highlighting their role in providing spiritual guidance and instruction. It emphasizes the importance of fathers in nurturing their children's faith and character development, while also cautioning against actions that could lead to anger or resentment in their children.

The Father’s Role and Example

1. Spiritual Leadership: Fathers are seen as spiritual leaders within their families and the church community. They are expected to guide and nurture their children's faith, providing a strong moral and spiritual foundation. This includes teaching biblical principles, leading family devotions, and setting an example of faithfulness.

2. Role Model for Children: Fathers serve as role models for their children, demonstrating godly characteristics and values. By modeling love, kindness, integrity, and a commitment to God, fathers can influence their children's spiritual growth and development.

3. Family Stewardship: Fathers are responsible for the well-being and spiritual upbringing of their families. They are encouraged to prioritize their family's spiritual needs, engage in regular worship and fellowship, and create an environment that supports the growth of faith within the home.

4. Discipleship and Mentoring: Fathers are called to disciple and mentor their children, helping them develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This involves investing time, providing guidance, answering questions, and assisting in their children's spiritual journey.

5. Fatherhood as a Reflection of God's Relationship: In evangelical theology, fatherhood is often seen as reflecting the relationship between God the Father and humanity. Fathers are encouraged to emulate God's love, forgiveness, and discipline, aiming to foster a healthy understanding of God's nature through their interactions with their children.

6. Nurturing Emotional and Physical Well-being: Alongside their spiritual responsibilities, fathers are also called to provide emotional support and care for their families. This includes being present, listening to their children, and fostering healthy relationships within the family unit. Additionally, fathers are encouraged to prioritize the physical well-being and safety of their families.

How Fathers Affect Children Indirectly

Unfortunately, the following is overlooked or not seen as important. Fathers can also influence children's well-being indirectly through their relationship with the child's mother. Conflict between parents is detrimental to children's well-being, especially if conflict is hostile and unresolved. Supportive co-parenting relationships, by contrast, are related to better self-regulation and fewer behavior problems in children. Families function as entire systems.

How The Church Can Help

As a church, we can support fathers in their role as caregivers, protectors, providers, and leaders by:

 - As a fellowship we teach and emphasize biblical principles of fatherhood: The church provides regular teachings, sermons, and Bible studies that highlight the importance of fatherhood based on biblical principles. This can include emphasizing the responsibilities of fathers to love, lead, protect, and provide for their families.

 - Celebrate and honor fathers and not cave to the idea of “toxic masculinity” but instead encourage male leadership in the home.

 - Pray for fathers: The church can regularly pray for fathers and their families, lifting them up in prayer for strength, wisdom, and grace in their roles. Prayer can be a powerful source of encouragement and support for fathers as they navigate the challenges and joys of fatherhood. 

This Father's Day, let us show our appreciation and gratitude for the fathers and father figures in our lives. Let us also remember our heavenly Father, who loves us unconditionally and gives us the perfect example of fatherhood.

I am so incredibly grateful and indebted to Jesus that I was taught how to be a father when I never had an example of what a father should be. No matter the challenges in life, we can overcome them through Christ.
